The Aftermath of Ondoy: Implications on Real Estate Philippines
Indeed, the wrath of Typhoon Ondoy was felt all over the world, especially to us Filipinos. The worst flood and rainfall in 40 years brought about by this unusual storm devastated the lives of over 500,000 Filipinos and ensued property damage of almost P3 billion pesos! Quite a tragedy indeed. For those needing assistance, please visit this link for Emergency Numbers: http://www.realestatephilippinesblog.com/to-those-affected-by-floods-of-typhoon-ondoy-floods/
Since so many of us had our eyes opened by Ondoy, many are now looking for new homes to start with, and now they realize the importance of having an ELEVATED property. The landscape of the Real Estate Philippines World has now changed due to this monster flood: people will now be more conscious of the property they will be investing in – particularly on whether it’s flood prone or not.
Usually, floods only affect the marginalized areas because they are near garbage-filled creeks, rivers, and esteros. We’ve already seen the destruction of Marikina, Pasig City and Cainta, along with many many other areas in Luzon. In the local news, you will mostly see images and reports of great calamity in Provident Village, Payatas, San Mateo, the Riverbanks in Marikina, and many parts along the Pasig River.
But because of Ondoy’s massive rainfall equalling to a month-and-a-half’s worth of rain, even middle-end and high-class villages were not spared of the flood. Posh subdivisions in Metro Manila that experienced such unusual flooding include Loyola Grand Villas, Valle Verde, Greenmeadows, Corinthian Gardens, North and South Forbes Park, Dasmarinas Village, New Manila Rolling Hills, Talayan Village, Xavierville Katipunan, Wilson Street, Greenhills, and so many others. Feel free to add to this list at the Comments section below…
Of course, the damage is much more extensive to the poor and middle-income earners, since they will find it harder to recuperate from their losses. The biggest loss is the one of lives, as our passed loved ones cannot be brought back.
Let us pray for the souls of the victims of these floods, and let us continue to help out the victims in any way that we can – through donations, volunteer work, and prayers. Another advise – look for a new home that’s virtually flood-free. Houses on top of hills and elevated roads would work, as well as those far away from creeks and rivers. Check and verify these properties through extensive research before buying or leasing them, so as to make sure that it is indeed flood-proof.

Also, let us be more environmentally-conscious from now on especially when throwing away our garbage, our car emmissions, and to recycle our non-biodegradables like plastics. Godspeed to everyone!
